Is Upwork automation allowed? What the bot policy actually says

Upwork treats scripts, browser extensions and third-party services that automatically act on its site as bots, and it lists a warning, a temporary restriction or a permanent block as possible outcomes. Here is what the policy covers, which tools it names, and the one approved route.

The short answer

  • A bot, to Upwork, is any script, extension or service that automatically sends requests, collects data or acts faster than a human.
  • It names auto-refreshers, page monitors, job watchers, macro recorders and user-script managers.
  • Outcomes: a warning, a temporary restriction or a permanent block. Upwork does not grant exceptions.
  • The approved route is an Upwork API key, and the API cannot submit proposals.

How Upwork defines a bot

Upwork's help centre has an article on using bots and automation, and its definition is broad. A bot is any script, program, browser extension or third-party service that automatically sends requests to Upwork, collects data, or performs actions faster or more frequently than a human could.

Two points in the article matter more than the definition. First, a tool describing itself as made for Upwork does not mean Upwork allows, approves or endorses it. Second, Upwork says it cannot approve or make exceptions for tools that automate interactions with the site. There is no list of approved extensions to check against.

The kinds of tools Upwork names

The article lists types of browser extension that commonly cause problems:

  • Job alert or job watcher tools that scrape Upwork or run searches for you
  • Auto-refresh tools and page monitors
  • Macro and RPA recorders
  • User-script managers
  • Auto-paging helpers and multi-site research tools
  • Anything that sends requests to Upwork while the tab is idle or in the background

Auto bidders that submit from a browser extension fall under the same description: an extension performing actions on Upwork for you. See how Upwork auto bidders work for the two ways they submit.

What happens to accounts that use them

Upwork lists three outcomes: a warning, a temporary account restriction, or a permanent block. For developers with API keys, misuse can also mean losing API access. Public forums have plenty of freelancers reporting suspensions they attribute to extensions such as auto-refreshers, but those are individual reports; Upwork does not publish enforcement numbers, and nobody outside Upwork can tell you how likely a specific tool is to be flagged.

The approved route: the Upwork API

The same article gives the compliant path for automation: request an Upwork API key. Upwork reviews the request against your account and stated use. Even with a key, some things stay off limits, including spamming proposals or invites and scraping data. It also lists ways API users get into trouble: using browser session cookies or OAuth tokens taken from the website in scripts, calling website pages instead of API endpoints, mixing credentials, sharing keys, and exceeding rate limits.

The API itself decides what an approved tool can do. It exposes job search, profiles, contracts and messages. It has no way to submit a proposal or spend Connects. So any tool that submits proposals for you is, by definition, doing it outside the API.

Where Nibwright sits

We built Nibwright around that route. It uses an approved Upwork API key and a read-only OAuth grant that you can revoke from Upwork's own settings. It never runs in your browser, never loads upwork.com pages, never sees your password, and holds no write access, so it cannot submit a proposal or spend a Connect. You read each draft, paste it into Upwork and press Submit yourself.

That is not a claim that Upwork endorses Nibwright; as the policy says, it does not endorse third-party tools. It is a description of which side of the policy's lines the product was designed to stay on.

Questions

Is using automation on Upwork allowed?

Only through the route Upwork provides: an approved Upwork API key, used within its rules. Upwork's policy treats scripts, browser extensions and third-party services that automatically act on the site as bots, says it cannot make exceptions for them, and lists a warning, temporary restriction or permanent block as possible outcomes.

Is auto bidding against Upwork's terms?

Upwork's API has no way to submit proposals, so auto bidders submit through a browser extension in your session or a Business Manager seat in an agency. Extensions that perform actions on Upwork fall within Upwork's bot policy, and spamming proposals is off limits even for approved API users.

Can Upwork ban you for using a Chrome extension?

Upwork's policy names several kinds of extension, including auto-refreshers, page monitors, job watchers, macro recorders and user-script managers, and says using bots can lead to a warning, a temporary restriction or a permanent block.

Are Upwork job alert tools allowed?

It depends on how they get the jobs. Upwork names job alert and watcher extensions that scrape or run searches as a problem. A service that reads jobs through the official API with an approved key is using the route Upwork provides for automation.

Is using AI to write Upwork proposals allowed?

Writing your proposal with help from AI is not automation of Upwork: nothing touches the site until you paste and submit it yourself. Upwork's rules on honesty still apply, so the proposal should describe experience you actually have.

Connect Upwork with read-only OAuth, save a search, and the first proposals arrive on the free 100 starter credits. You still press Submit yourself.
