Upwork job alerts

Upwork job alerts in Slack and email, now that the RSS feeds are gone

Upwork switched off job RSS feeds in August 2024. Nibwright replaces them: it checks your saved Upwork searches every 60 seconds through the official API, screens out low-quality clients, and sends the matches to Slack or email.

The short answer

  • Upwork RSS feeds stopped working after 20 August 2024.
  • Nibwright checks each saved search every 60 seconds through Upwork's official API, from our servers, not your browser.
  • Matches go to Slack or email, screened on client spend, hires and payment verification.
  • Alert-only searches cost no credits per alert. Turn on drafting and each alert arrives with a proposal written.

What happened to Upwork's RSS feeds

Upwork used to let any search produce an RSS feed, and a lot of freelancers piped those feeds into Slack, Zapier or a feed reader so they would hear about new jobs quickly. Upwork stopped supporting RSS after 20 August 2024. The feed URLs no longer return jobs, which is why any tool or Zap built on them went quiet.

Upwork's own suggestions for what to use instead are saved searches, notification settings, recommended jobs in the feed, and Job Digest emails. The digest emails are only for Rising Talent and Top Rated freelancers, and Upwork's instant job alerts require a Freelancer Plus membership and are based on jobs similar to ones you have already applied to, rather than on a search you define.

How Nibwright's Upwork job alerts work

You connect your Upwork account with read-only OAuth and save one or more searches. Each search is checked through Upwork's official GraphQL API every 60 seconds, on our servers, so nothing runs in your browser and alerts keep arriving while your laptop is closed.

Every new posting is screened against the search's filters, then scored against your Upwork profile. Only postings that clear both are sent to you. Set a search to alert only and it tells you about matches without drafting anything: alerts cost no credits, only creating the search does (5 credits). Switch it to auto-draft and each alert arrives with a proposal already written.

Upwork alerts in Slack and email

Alerts go to a Slack channel through an incoming webhook, to email, or both. A busy search can match several jobs in a single check, so alerts are grouped into one digest instead of one message per job: a digest is sent after 90 seconds with nothing new, or at most 10 minutes after the first job in it.

What a Slack alert looks like
3 new matches for "Next.js + Stripe" ★ 0.91 Fix Stripe webhook failing on Vercel $60–$90/hr · United States · suggested bid $75/hr "Hi Sam, 'No signatures found' on Vercel but not locally almost always means…" → Review draft 0.78 Next.js checkout page performance Fixed $1,200 · Canada · suggested bid $1,150 → Review draft +1 more

Each alert carries the job title, budget, client country, which search found it, a match score from 0 to 1, and, when a draft was written, its opening line, so you can decide from a lock screen whether it is worth opening. Setup guides: Slack and email.

Why this is not a job-watcher extension

Upwork's automation policy specifically names job alert and watcher tools that scrape or run searches, auto-refreshers and page monitors as the kind of browser extension that can get an account restricted. Its compliant route for automation is an approved API key.

Nibwright uses that route: an approved key, the official GraphQL API, and a read-only OAuth grant you can revoke from Upwork's settings at any time. It never loads upwork.com in your browser, never asks for your password, and makes one API request per search per check, at most every 60 seconds. The full reasoning is in Is Upwork automation allowed?

Questions

Does Upwork still have RSS feeds?

No. Upwork stopped supporting job RSS feeds after 20 August 2024, and the old feed URLs no longer return jobs. Upwork now points freelancers to saved searches, notification settings and, for Freelancer Plus members, instant job alerts.

How do I get Upwork job notifications in Slack?

Save a search in Nibwright and add a Slack incoming webhook on the Integrations page. Each search is checked every 60 seconds through Upwork's official API, and matching jobs are posted to your Slack channel as a single digest per batch.

How fast are the alerts?

Each search is checked every 60 seconds, and a digest goes out 90 seconds after the batch stops growing, so most alerts arrive within a few minutes of a job being posted, while the list of proposals the client sees is still short.

Do job alerts cost credits?

No. Creating a search costs 5 credits. After that, alerts on an alert-only search cost nothing. Credits are only spent when a proposal is drafted.

Can I get Upwork alerts on Telegram or Discord?

Not at the moment. Nibwright delivers to Slack and email. Telegram and Discord are not supported.

Is using an Upwork job alert tool safe?

It depends on how the tool gets the jobs. Browser extensions that scrape or refresh Upwork pages are named in Upwork's automation policy. A tool that reads jobs through the official API with an approved key and a read-only OAuth grant is using the route Upwork provides for automation.
