Upwork cover letter generator
An Upwork cover letter generator that writes from your real work history
Nibwright drafts Upwork cover letters that open on the client's problem and back it up with one project you actually delivered, taken from your Upwork contracts and client feedback. You review every draft and submit it yourself.

What it writes
On Upwork the proposal is typed into a field labelled Cover Letter, which is why the two names are used interchangeably. Nibwright drafts that letter, and the answers to any screening questions on the posting, for each job that matches one of your saved searches. You can also paste any Upwork job URL and get a draft on demand.
Every letter follows the same five parts:
- Greeting using the client's name when the post gives it, never an invented one.
- Hook: one sentence mirroring the client's specific problem, drawn from their post.
- Proof: the single most relevant thing you have done, not a list of skills.
- Call to action: a real, low-effort next step.
- Sign-off with your first name, and nothing invented after it.
Letters are kept to 110 to 170 words, because clients see the first couple of lines before deciding to click. The reasoning behind the structure is in How to write an Upwork proposal.
Written from your real Upwork work history
When you connect Upwork, Nibwright reads your profile and your completed contracts, including what each client asked for and the feedback they left. Those are the strongest evidence a freelancer has, because a real client paid for the work and signed it off. Where a past contract fits the new job, the letter cites it, and may quote a short phrase of that client's feedback.
It will not invent a contract, a rating, a client quote or a number that is not in your history, and it never names a past client. Upload a CV on the Integrations page and it draws on that too.

Why not just use ChatGPT?
You can, and plenty of freelancers do. The trouble is what a general chatbot does not know. It has not seen your Upwork contracts, so it either writes about you in generic terms or confidently invents experience. It also reaches for the same openers every other applicant's chatbot uses, which clients have learned to skip.
| General chatbot | Nibwright | |
|---|---|---|
| Knows your Upwork history | Only what you paste in | Reads your profile and completed contracts |
| Finds the job | You copy the post in | Watches your saved searches and drafts on match |
| Screening questions | One at a time, by hand | Answered alongside the letter |
| Stock openers | Common | Banned list enforced on every draft and every edit |
| Invented experience | A real risk | Only cites what is in your history |
| Client context | None | Spend, hires and payment status shown beside the draft |
You review it, you submit it
The draft opens beside the original posting and the client's history. Edit it by hand, or tell it what to change (“shorter”, “lead with the migration project”) and it rewrites under the same rules. Refining is free and unlimited.
Then copy it, paste it into Upwork's apply form and press Submit yourself. Upwork has no API for submitting proposals, and a tool that submits for you has to drive your browser or an agency account to do it. The auto-bidder page covers why we stop at the draft.
What it costs
A draft costs 10 credits; redrafting and refining the same job are free. New accounts start with 100 credits, enough for 10 drafts, with no card. The monthly plan is $14.99 for 1,000 credits, about 100 proposals. Full detail on the pricing page.
Questions
Is an Upwork cover letter the same as a proposal?
Yes, in practice. Upwork's apply form calls the text field a Cover Letter, and freelancers call the whole application a proposal. Nibwright writes that letter and the answers to any screening questions on the posting.
Is it free to try?
Yes. New accounts get 100 credits with no card, which covers 10 drafted proposals. After that it is $14.99 a month.
Will clients know the letter was written with AI?
The letters avoid the stock phrases that give most AI proposals away, and they are built from your real work history rather than generic claims. You also read and edit every draft before sending it, which is the best protection of all.
Does it answer Upwork screening questions?
Yes. Each screening question on the posting is answered in one to three sentences in your voice, from your background. If your history does not cover something a question asks, the answer says so rather than inventing specifics.
Can I use my own template?
Yes. Add a template to a saved search and drafts for that search adapt it, keeping your voice and personalising the content. Leave it blank and each letter is written from scratch.
